Spyware and Adware on the Internet

Viruses and malware are, unfortunately, all over the internet.  Many websites and downloadable programs distribute spyware.  Attempting to increase understanding of spyware and adware by the general public, it was given a formal classification called privacy-invasive software, which umbrella all forms this software.  These software programs are able to collect personal information, download internet browsing history, and even open files with sensitive information, which can lead to identity theft.

These programs invade desktop and laptop computers through pop-ups, Trojan horses, plug-ins, and even certain websites.  Some common sites that distribute spyware and adware are GameHouse, Movieland, MyWebSearch, ScenicReflections, and Zango.  Some companies that distribute adware inform the user as to what data is being collected and for what purpose.  While this sounds illegal, it is not.

Furthermore, not all adware is spyware.  Most adware programs simply display advertisements, commonly pornographic in nature, without the users consent.  It is a way for large media corporations to make money without specifically selling a product.

Spyware can be difficult to find on a computer, especially since it is often installed without the users knowledge.  Occasionally it will piggyback on a download of desired software, or will trick the user into downloading it by pretending to be something else.  Unlike viruses, spyware does not attempt to spread and infect other workstations, but can still create problems for the infected computer.  Typical behaviors of affected processors are inability to open or freezing of applications, slowed speed and performance, system wide crashes and failure to boot.  Most systems are infected with multiple programs; rarely does one program make a system unusable.

The best way to protect a computer and eliminate spyware and adware is to prevent the infections at the beginning.  Many anti-virus and anti-spyware products are available, with new and updated versions released regularly.  Freeing a system of infection will improve speed and overall performance.  Anti-spyware programs work to intercept potential download and installation of spyware by scanning incoming network data.  A second, more popular method the programs use is to detect and remove spyware already installed on the computer.  It can be set to scan daily, weekly, or monthly. The user can then choose which programs to delete or keep.
