Schools all across the country are running pilot programs that integrate computer, laptops, and even iPods into the class room in creative ways. The question is not how wired will your kids be but when and how do you expose them to new technology. Net books are an excellent option for parents looking to give their child the freedom to surf the internet and learn how to use a computer.
These new additions to the computer family are no longer just web surfers but also run many other programs as well. They are small, durable, and often not as expensive as a full blown laptop or desk top. Many net books are now made with kids in mind, designed and decorated specifically for children. Many net books come with the option of cellular internet, which is the parents choice and certainly not essential. More and more places offer free internet and there is a good chance that the places, like home, school or a friends house where they are most likely to use a computer already have wireless. Cellular, while handy, is not essential unless you are a business traveler or always on the go.
Net books are built with durability in mind and they easily stow into a small handbag or backpack. Most schools now allow children to use laptops at school for note taking or assignments.
When making the choice to buy a net book for your child make sure that ground rules for usage are set for usage and content. Depending on the parents comfort level and the maturity of the child it is a good idea to consider some type of software that restricts access to certain sites. And, it is usually a good idea to pay the extra money for a warranty. Net books are durable but kids are masters at testing durability and I would hate to see a new opportunity end up ruined because a kid is being a kid.
