As the CES 2011 showed, Asus has been loading the market with hybrid products that combine the multimedia characteristics of tablets with the classical functionality of a notebook. The Taiwanese manufacturer is not exclusive in this direction and the new ASUS EEE Slate EP121 also showcased during the Consumer Electronics Show confirms this.
The gadget in question has Windows 7 as its operating system, a solution less used due to its low energetic efficiency. Also this powerful Tablet PC can benefit from the services of a QWERTY keyboard, so we are again talking about a potential notebook-tablet hybrid.
The design chosen for this Asus Windows Tablet PC is similar to its brother, the Transformer. With no physical keys, the gadget stands out with its IPS touchscreen that comes with a 12.1 inch diagonal and a resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels that can also be found with the 10.1 inch models.
As previously mentioned, this model supports the interaction with a wireless QWERTY Keyboard that is not very different from the ones provided by the Transformer and Slider models. The users that want to take quick notes without using the keyboard can chose the digital stylus from Wacom.
Since we are talking about a system with Windows 7, the Asus EEE Slate EP121 has a typical configuration. It includes an Intel Core i5 dual-core processor with a frequency of 1.33 GHz that can be boosted using the Core i5 Turbo Boost option to 1.86 GHz. The unit is backed up by 2 or 4 GB of RAM, depending of course on the users preferences. The system is complete with an onboard Intel graphics card. The storage is done using SSD with a maximum capacity of 32GB or 64GB.
The internet connection is provided by wireless technology not by 3G. Local file transfer is accomplished using the USB port or the Bluetooth option. This “brother” only has a 2MP camera placed on the backside of the gadget that is complete with LED Flash.
A downside to this, even if talking about the best tablet PC on the market, is that its battery life is pretty low in comparison to other devices on the market: 2.5 hours while streaming HD contend and 4.5 hours in normal browsing and document editing mode.
