A Review of the MSI Wind

image of MSI Wind laptopThe MSI Wind netbook has a matte, 1024px by 768px screen that boasts one of the sharpest displays of the netbook genre. It handles movies and videos very well, with one caveat – the angled viewing is not great, and would make multiple people trying to watch the screen very difficult due to color degradation at extreme angles.

However, the embedded microphone, webcam, and speakers all work at a quality level much more similar to a full-sized laptop’s (especially the impressive speakers), not a netbook computer, and indeed it will be easy to forget the usual limitations of netbooks when you’re using the MSI Wind.

The Atom nanoprocesser is also very easy even for computer amateurs to overclock and get even better performance through the TurboDrive that can increase the processor to an effective 1.9GHz. Its 80GB hard drive is enough for all but the largest programs to handle with ease, and its bootup time is quick and painless.

It does come by default with a lot of applications you probably will never use, and some trial versions of some legitimate programs that you may or may not be interested in, but a clean re-install is the best bet for any new computer, anyway. Nevertheless, be prepared to spend a couple hours re-installing the Microsoft operating system and removing all of the bloatware.

The MSI Wind netbook consistently outperforms the netbook models it is most often compared to, particularly the ASUS and the HP Mini-Note, in terms of both computing power and the secondary characteristics, like keyboard size and display quality.

Overall, the quality to price ratio for this netbook computer is excellent, and it’s a particularly good choice for people who don’t want the complication of owning both a laptop and a netbook PC. The MSI netbook provides the battery life and portability of a tiny netbook with the full-sized features and processing power of a much more expensive laptop.
